Joseph Nicolosi Jr. Provides Comments to The Christian Post on the SCOTUS Conversion Therapy Ban

April 1, 2026

Dr. Joseph Nicolosi Jr., licensed clinical psychologist, researcher, and founder of the Reintegrative Therapy Association, praised the recent SCOTUS ruling striking down a Colorado law that restricted the free speech for therapists working with  minors in a recent phone interview with The Christian Post.

Nicolosi, who submitted an amicus brief for the case in 2025, explained he was “excited that the court chose to protect the constitutional rights of psychotherapists[.]” Nicolosi expects that this will not only positively impact clients seeking therapy, but it will liberate therapists who have been on the sidelines too afraid to contribute to this work because of the ban’s chilling effects.

This recent SCOTUS ruling underscores what Nicolosi views as a broader concern about government involvement in psychotherapy, particularly when it comes to regulating conversations between therapists and their clients. He emphasized that, in his view, laws restricting talk therapy and certain therapeutic approaches can create a chilling effect, discouraging clinicians from engaging in open dialogue or offering treatments aligned with their clients’ goals. As the implications of the decision continue to unfold, Nicolosi suggested it may lead to greater freedom for therapists to practice without fear of legal repercussions.
