Reintegrative Therapy Association Submits Amicus Brief to U.S. Supreme Court in Landmark Free Speech Case
LOS ANGELES, CA — The Reintegrative Therapy Association, Inc., under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Nicolosi Jr., has officially filed an amicus curiae brief with the United States Supreme Court in the high-profile case Chiles v. Salazar. This case, set to be heard during the Court’s 2025–26 term, carries major implications for free speech and therapeutic freedom across the United States.
The brief, submitted in June 2025, argues that current laws prohibiting therapeutic interventions—when those interventions may affect sexual attractions as a byproduct—are overly broad and constitutionally vague. These laws not only stifle responsible clinical practice, the Association contends, but also infringe upon the rights of clients seeking trauma-informed, research-based treatment such as Reintegrative Therapy.
“Our position is clear: clients should have the right to explore healing from past trauma with a licensed therapist, without the government deciding which personal outcomes are politically acceptable,” said Dr. Nicolosi Jr. “Reintegrative Therapy is not conversion therapy. It is a scientifically grounded, client-directed approach that prioritizes healing and personal agency.”
The amicus brief draws upon a growing body of clinical literature that supports trauma-informed models like Reintegrative Therapy. By filing this brief, the Association hopes to protect the rights of both therapists and clients, and to clarify the essential differences between coercive, outdated methods and modern, evidence-based therapeutic care.
